Yorum was established in Istanbul by university students in 1985 with an objective to react to the military coup that took place in 1980 and the depolitization and suppression policies that were subsequently imposed. The band, which was initially influenced by Ruhi Su, Mahzuni Şerif, Inti Illimani, Victor Jara, Quilapayun and Theodorakis, was formed to make the voice of the land and the people of Anatolia, where the band was born, heard with an infusion of revolutionary and socialist music. In a short period of time, Yorum has become a crucial name for dissident sensitivity and the struggle for rights and liberties.

As well as releasing an album and presenting multiple shows in Turkey and Europe every year since 1987, the band has participated in hundreds of mass protests, street demonstrations, strikes, and factory and university occupations. Band members have faced numerous custody cases, arrests and prohibitions due to the organized-revolutionary-activist nature of the band and the dissenting direction in the content and presentation of their music. Several members of the band were tortured on many occasions and were sentenced to decades of prison time; even the band's CD's and cassettes were fired at by security forces. However, all those obstacles could not impede the band's progress. As well as singing in Turkish, Yorum sings songs in other languages such as Kurdish, Arabic and Circassian , that are spoken in Anatolia. The band participates in the struggle for the right to speak these languages.

Subjects such as anti-fascist and anti-imperialist struggles, prison massacres, destruction caused by natural disasters, imperialist wars, deaths, love, virtue and longing for a free world form the band's lyrical content. While increasing the complexity and depth of its musical structure through both its inner dynamics and its awareness of the local and global agenda, the band has not deviated from its main direction; in fact it has influenced many new musicians and bands with the "Yorum style". Yorum has incorporated local instruments such as mey ( a diatonic stringed instrument), baglama ( folk instrument with three double strings), kaval (shepherd's pipe) as well as many other instruments such as the violin, oboe and guitar. The band grounds its solid rhythm compositions and fluent melodies in the dominant solo and choral vocals. This music, which can be defined as folk-rock, contains timbres reminiscent of local folk songs, Mediterranean melodies, Latin American anthems and rock music.

The band, which has been a pioneer not only with its music but also with its vision, has succeeded in pleasing large audiences every year despite all prohibitions. Its albums are sold in the millions ; articles and books are published about the band; they are called "Prison Singers" and the "Snowplow" by the media. Yorum continues to sing hopeful songs in the name of all the world's revolutionary music.

Welcome to the İdil Cell!
On 1st of April, many democratic mass organizations, including our culture center, were busted by the police in the "same time" with Europe. Tens of people have been put under house arrest at the time of these raids. The police are reflecting this operation to public opinion as this is a big blow deal to the organization DHKP-C. A very big lie! The biggest evidence, that the people who have been put under house arrest have no relevance with the operation, is the way of approach of the police to the subject. The police, who are trying to prove with the commentaries, which stink lie at every levels, that they have succeed a big job, have sunk into a swamp of lie in every levels of this putting under house arrest run, which is called operation.

We Want Freedom for Grup Yorum
A fake world is being created. The most basic mortar of this is democracy lie. Look, you will see everywhere with the most dressy sentences how it has been became democratic. But it's not enough to look at its prisons to see which condition the country has became into. Reality of Turkey has always been the reality of prison. Prisons have been the destiny of people who are in the side of right and law in Turkey, who wants bread and justice.

Why was "Feda" banned?
No reason for it has been given, apart from an abstract and dry official statement. Apart from that statement, they have no other reasons, it is merely an indication of control commission members obey the orders they are given. This cannot be the reason we were banned. In this chain of obedience to orders, they moved with great speed to confiscate our cassettes, and though we moved quickly to get them to explain concretely why they have done so, a month has passed and there has been no reply. It is known that if an album does not pass the control commission's scrutiny, it is because of one line in a song or an entire song. Or else there are several songs like that. But there are 14 songs in the "Feda" cassette. Is that the reason for banning all of them? Well, "Meryem" is an Arabic-language love song, "This Homeland Is Ours" is a poem by Nazim Hikmet which we have set to music, "Does Anyone Hear My Voice?" was composed after the August 17 and November 12 earthquakes, there is a poem by Dadaloglu which we have set to music, called "Kozanoglu", and is that a reason for the control commission to ban all of them? Who is threatening national security? Dadaloglu or Nazim Hikmet? How does the public benefit? How do they determine that this album is harmful to the public?

Our songs Will Win!
"We wanted to bring light to the darkness and a voice to the silence of September 12, 1980 (the date of the military coup in Turkey). The way we did this was music. We considered this as the road to fraternity, equality and sharing. It meant love and hope to us. It meant to us the longing for days of freedom and without exploitation..." This is the road we have been on for 19 years.

Banned Activities, Music Casettes
Orçun Mastçi, the director of the play "Mikado'nun Çöpleri (Mikado's Wastes)" staged by the theatre group of the Van branch of the teachers' trade union "Egitim-Sen" was detained and threatened by the police in Hakkari. Mastçi stated the following about the event which happened on 4 July: "We would stage the play at Hakkari Cultural Center at 7pm. Before that we were sitting outside. The National Anthem was sung in front of the Atatürk Monument, I did not realize it. Suddenly two police officers held my arms. They accused me of disrespecting the National Anthem. I was held in custody for 3 hours, I was heavily insulted. They released me some 15 minutes before the play started. When I arrived at the place where we were about to perform the play, I noticed the police officers decorating the scene with Turkish Flags. They said, 'We shall detain you if the flags touch the floor'. I told them that there was not such a thing in the setting, and that this would render the play meaningless. But I was warned toughly"

Music Censorship in Turkey... Yesterday and Today
1. Historical Background a. Religious roots of Music Censorship: Music Censorship in our past, finds its roots in Islam. It is believed that these words belong to prophet Mohammed: "Women who lets her -melodic voice- heard by a man must be excommunicated". This interpretation has been the reason to forbid female voice to be heard through centuries. Even today, choirs singing religious music in ceremonies consist of men only. It is also told that "musical instruments" are included to that sentence too. But this interpretation is not widely accepted in Turkey. Both in contemporary Ottoman music -based on the music of Byzantium- and Military or Folk music, there have been many instruments used.
